Automation Since the Industrial Era

Automation is not something new, it all started at a great scale during the Industrial Revolution from about 1760 to sometime between 1820 and 1840. We developed new ways to manufacture goods and in the process improve the efficiency of production and improve our standards of life.

This revolution came at the cost of many jobs, as the production of goods had many humans working on them. From blacksmiths to weavers, Many jobs were lost to machines but that was not the end of society, those with these skills sought to make specialized or luxury items, or acquired new skills as to obtain a new job.

The transition took its time, almost 80 years. The improvements it brought were huge, productions lines were created with machines doing specific tasks on a long line.

Of course not all jobs were lost, many with skills that machines could not replicate still got their jobs, and in some cases they were now being assisted by machines which allowed more efficiency.

Machines were created to assist humans on their jobs.

With many tasks being done by machines, humans were capable of focusing on less tasks which brought better health for the people on their job.

Education was on the rise as new skills were needed and jobs hazards went down.

Small tasks connecting 2 pieces together, painting a metal tube and many other simple tasks were automated, those jobs known as low skill jobs were now done by machines. Most of those small tasks involved low pay jobs with little to no concern about the health of the user, from carrying heavy objects to hazardous situations as to complete a task. Without mentioning the lack of education many workers on those areas had , as they only needed to do small tasks.

With machines doing those small tasks, many transitioned to new jobs and sought to acquire new skills.  As machines took over many small jobs, they needed humans to supervise the machines, to repair them if needed or provide maintenance and even improve them or design new production lines. It was then the the era of high skill and high pay jobs started and with it education became a priority.

As time passed we created new machines to do many jobs, from sewing machines to air conditioning and robots. Automation became the most important factor in the exponential advancement of technology for the coming years.
